Young Goodman Brown Questions
1. I have a feeling that Hawthorne wrote the story to give a point that although there are many stories that may scare human beings for many reasons, our mind is the one that scares us the most, but we somewhat don’t point it out. Also, it may be a way to deliver a message to spouses that men, or women, can be loyal at first, but can easily waver and turn dark the next. How human beings are capable of sinning.
2. After reading the story, I agree because I do believe that her name does suit her. Brown’s “faith” was supposed to stay with Faith.
3. I have a feeling that the pink ribbons signifies the type of personality or characteristic Faith has because she is a young and happy person. Maybe it’s a kind of symbol for purity of a young mind.
4. What Brown witnessed was, I believe, is real due to the lines, “The evil magic was out in to make Brown think he was in a dream. His view on people will be forever changed.” That it was a hallucination of some sort conjured by something evil.
5. I believe that the old man is actually the Devil himself because when Brown met the old man, he mentioned that he is dressed up, “in grave and decent attire.” The old man seems to be proud of himself and what he does to men.
6. The staff would have to represent as to what the Devil’s Staff is. Like in Adam and Eve, Brown was fooled due to temptation and is misled to the path of evil and sin.
7. Brown would remain thinking the same thoughts about others, or seeing everyone in the same point of view. Yes, he’d still have Faith because yes, he’d still trust his wife and the townspeople.
