The ideas about what the central message of The Great Gatsby talked about in class were all good ones, and somehow similar but explained in multiple ways. Our group said, “The central message is to live in the moment because the past cannot be changed to obtain the American Dream.” As an American Dream, it can be starting anew, but for the book, or Gatsby specifically, it is Daisy.
As for me, I believe that the central message is about not being able to move on from any happenings that occurred in the past and constantly having the strong desire to correct that past during the present time and hoping to continue fixing it in the future. That was what Gatsby, impressing Daisy in the present time to replace the happenings from the past. Maybe the saying “love is blind” does go along well with this book as well because the one time Daisy caused that accident, Gatsby decided to take the blame because he loves Daisy that much.
